Cezanne and binocular vision

The previous friday I visited a local open studio talk in a design studio in Bristol.

The talk was gradual and had allowed listeners to interpret a concept of how visual, digital communication systems and devices alike could be changed to influence a natural sense of depth as our human eyes should naturally interpret the world.

What I try to explain by this, from what I have interpreted by the head of research John Jupe of perceptual technologies who had led the talk, was that motion blur and effects such as depth of field do not exist through out eyes.

We observe a small depth of field in photography (common e.g macro lens) to represent the unseeable, but as pronounced by Perceptual Technologies, it is merely a representation of peripheral vision.

How would we discard representation?

How could we remove artificial depth?

The use of vision space described my perceptual technologies is to represent natural peripheral vision from within a 3-D environment, projected onto a 2-D plane. E.g, a first person shooter game engine projects onto the television screen electronically, the depth of field is limited as a sense of space between objects unclear. The eye has to observe the distance of objects in relation with each other, whereas in the real world, our eyes can adjust to understand space by creating concentration on a particular point of focus, and leaving the unecassary objects from within peripheral vision.

Cezanne, as well Picasso have been known to vigorously experiment with this concept of natural sight from within imagery; or rather techniques to create greater three dimensional imagery. The use of distortion has been influenced by perceptual technologies and their modern take on alternative vision. vision space.

Perceptual technologies devised an effect as 'ExpD', which is illustrated by perceptual technologies on their webpage. The use of this ExpD effect simulates this desired effect of distortion to represent depth, a more so natural response to three dimensional space on entertainment programs, and many others.

Well inspired.

certainly a website to visit for examples and other extended details

Cartoon illustrator work

Just looking at a few images and trying to illustrate them as I would do in pencil. Shame the file size is small hence the poor resolution but I am pretty happy with the development of some of my illustrator vector work.

Just creating this minimalist form allows me to think differently about the composition of shapes, in particular through different layers. Attentions to detail, or what is necessary. The list continues with this interest in the efficiency of minimalism and similar 'no styles'

Just a funky man made on illustrator.

Been mostly working on some web site design work recently so excuse the slow posts! working on a little mural though so really enjoying progressing through these projects.

Cafe Graphic 2.0

Just playing with a couple of adobe tools to create a slick cafe graphic.

Im on my way to printing off my mock up menu, so much more to designing than working on the PC/Mac. I used to believe by committing myself to the adobe range of tools that i could master the design process. I have found that it isn't simply like that at all. Design is a lifestyle of work, where the mind needs to find that taste and interest in visual solution.

Its more than working on screen.

Playing with hand made photoshop brushes

Such great fun with some experimental photoshop work. Bit unusual for a stance painting outcome, but I really enjoy the hair textures! I scanned my hand drawn ink and paint works onto the PC, to create my own custom brushes.

logo and imagery at Skate Cafe

photographs taken at the Harbourside in Bristol. The use of imagery has become a greater interest in the practical use of combinations of photo and typography. The circular shape of the logo is interrupted with triangles and other geometrical shapes, as well as the use of text to present the title of the Cafe company.

Growing an interest in creating mock leaflets and menus, will continue my research and skill developments to create a graphic production to the best of my skill level.

Coffee to go! cafe graphic

Just working on a little side project on top of what a mountain of Graphic designer interest in my new graphic design foundation degree that I have just recently started!

I have been volunteering for a couple of Art galleries recently which has been really interesting. I have recently watched the 'Helvetica' film also, which has held such a great inspiration for some more graphic and type work to come.

hummingbird inkdrawing

Just entered by first year of my university foundation degree in graphic design and oh how busy it has been! Been so busy, creating strange ink drawings like this one...

what nice weather we have been having in Bristol!

This is an A3 ink drawing produced by hand with fountain pen
- no fine liner here on this one!

Jack

spacemen and the large (and rather quirky) weather balloon

Its nice to see some excellent work come together into a finished illustration.

There have been many posts relating to this which has discussed the development on the project, but here is the finished product. Acrylic on A3 canvas, with gloss coats and slight touches of fine liner pen to differentiate minimal details.
I feel that with these rather quirky characters, I wish to provide a greater range of usage for these original characters. To be used in different situations in other scenes in my work.

enjoy!

Spacemen! - sci-fi illustration in acrylic

A small project that I have been working on over the past three weeks. By completing this painting, I could really stretch my painting abilities of constructing shape and perspective with minimal construction lines.

The large blue sphere could allow me so create a sense of space within the illustration. By utilising the four spacemen, I could emphasise the depth of field by allowing them to interact with this strange space balloon.

- easel set up -

- paint detailing -

I wish to soon produce a clear, clean cut image to place onto blogger to really produce a refined image.
Throughout the piece, I excluded the use of ink and the marker, to really stretch my detailing using black paint and brush control. The repetition of uniform and spacemen size had also pushed the boundaries of character duplication.

A test of imagination and constructive thought processes to visualise and produce a three dimensional character. Such a great painting exercise!

hope this makes you :)

Sister Corita Kent

Such a wonderful day to bask around the internet for interesting information and creative interests.

The pop artist and graphic artist Corita Kent was recommended by one of my friends who is an archivist at a local art gallery in the centre of Bristol. The amazing contrast and complimantry colours. Bright and often unusual, but compatible text layouts to please the eyes of the viewer.

Sister Corita Kent has been a large eye opener for me and the interest of graphics. Of type, and of shape, texture and colour. You can truly immerse yourself within the 'feel good' pop artists works. She utilised printmaking as a main source of art productions (similar to many pop artists). Using washes, paints, and similar stencil effects into her work throughout. As a creative myself, I found her work most inviting into the print makers world, and I hope it does for you too.

To jump into an immediate search, I though the wikipedia link may benefit you.

Also, some more of Corita Kent's print works on sale, such beautiful photography.

I haven't produced much work to post today, as over the series of the last few days have been most exciting for me. I have received an interview from a local cafe business yesterday, and have received a trial period to prove myself. Hope all goes well aha, enjoy a taste of the works of Corita Kent.

Science fiction weather balloon in acrylics

A work in progress of a rather unusual illustrative piece on canvas.

I had some great dfun in creating this large spherical object, especially emphasising leading lines and shapes most of all. I wish to include some strange people working on this weather balloon also, illustrated in a ink drawing in a similar post as illustrated.

Cant wait to refine and polish it all up... stay tuned blogger and google+

35mm film

Some excellent results of some pictures I took whilst in Portugal. Excellent colours and such a representation of the heat in portugal.

Currently painting such an interesting science fiction piece, which I may consider broadcasting online. Ill fill the details in if this is a to do. Its based off  some inspiration conjured up from the unusual electricity adverts which dominate our TV screens.

How strange. Anyway, lets just say a few sketches will be up and online over the next few days concerning aliens in armoured underwater suits maintaining such an unusual weather balloon. So keep a look out 8-)

Ink cartoon two

A little thumbnail I made for a painting that I am working on at the moment, I may wish to proceed with live painting on the web, unsure as of yet but will keep you posted.

a strange space station, a weather balloon they say? It was great playing with some shape of the balloon. I can't wait to upload the progress of my current painting, the shape much clearer than this little thumbnail. Had some fun nonetheless!

Using a Trust tablet - painting

This is something a little new to me, and even makes me smile when I look at it now. How strange this machine is to be.
This is a little first attempt at not only using a trust tablet, but also digital painting. Such unrefined lines in places and a slight ambiguity towards with unusual machine. I am however happy with this outcome of this strange washing machine looking structure. Such fun and minutes using that control + Z button in trying to refine darker lines.

Hope to practice with a bit more of this digital painting, and overall the trust tablet has proved itself. I was surprised that it was both compatible with both mac and pc, but rather glad that it is. I bought an A4 tablet to render this image, but I feel that the size was a little unnecessary and that A4 was certainly too big for my desk space.

Flyposter - music promotions

It has been enjoyable trying to replicate a band logo onto a sticker texture, to simulate replicating a graffiti fly-poster image.
The 'Gnarly Charlie' graphic was completely hand drawn using inks, and the characters had been rearranged to influence continuous flow by adjusting spacings ect.
The work was made for a friend who wishes to pursue a small musical company.

It is nice to be back enjoying the cloudy weather.

Vibrant flowers 35mm

Some beautiful flowers that I had captured whilst I was away.
I used the a Nikon 35mm camera to take this photographs.

I love utilising the depth of field with subject matter as flowers and other organic materials. It is so easy to compose the photographs focus points by altering the aperture and emphasising it in the subject matter as illustrated.

p.s going to reading festival tomorrow and will continue to post the following monday/tuesday :)

It's not often that I take many photographs of a single subject matter on a film camera, but this beautiful object deserves a good 5/24 takes.

Can you spot the insect?

The power of film!

This photograph was produced by a F55 Nikon film camera, how wonderful the uses of film can create  such interesting and sometimes unusual effects, especially with the interference with UV. Had such a great time photographing these strange insects and/or mini beasts in our local garden.

Children activity book continued.

Just a interesting and partly hand drawn design to be used for activities for children. This is one of many posts of the same project which inspires children to find out more about the adult world via games and puzzles.

For example, how games similar to monopoly can intervene with children's understandings of money, future and property. The guide is designed for a Olivia Plender exhibition.

It is time to Rise Early world

I couldn't post yesterday, the creative drives were simply too much. Created this excellent art guide for families at a exhibition at my local town. Great fun meeting people in the making, and getting my editor  and Typography skills together.

Beehive. An organ which drives the motions and motives. It exists as a symbol for the exchange of movement and work to provide for the future of human kind.

Jack

14 August 2012

The World is an Organism

Some more iconic symbols rendered on Illustrator, a few other of my blog posts may provide in depth details to this imagery.

But with symbols like these, a beehive, a representation for human exchange vie cause and effect to produce and consume. It can entail a self-explanatory concept for you, the viewer to absorb (and to consume as media, a main function to maintain parts of the beehive).

I like this shade of gray. 80% black to be exact.

Funky icon contin. Symbols and Silhouettes for all

Another strange and unusual piece of graphic work, composed to demonstrate role-play and the performing arts via image.
The iconic performance drama masks were made to appear as if they were a divided shape. A shape similar to a horizontally cut egg or tablet. This presents a unusual treat of individuality to the design.
Yet the iconic contrast of emotions through the masks are recognized by the viewer almost immediatly.

This will also be published alongside active and energetic text for children to discover and role-play activities from within the arts space in an adventure through the gallery.

The boxes are simple geometrical shapes which break the ice to generate a more so symmetrical image, but also advocate mystery.

what is in the box?

a chest perhaps?

I can open it can you?

Draw, create, build

May be a slow and steady start for the blog but what can I say aha. I had a lovely time away for now, and am glad to be back creating and building some ideas.

Here is a short and sweet pencil design I made to be used in a exhibition children's guide to instruct people to draw in different areas of the leaflet. The iconic design was fun to create, and the use of 80%of black was great to advocate subtle features of the design. What better way to portray design details on a grayscale print. The majority of illustrations were constructed using this 80% black, and the text was printed in original black to create a priority of information.

glad to be back!

How many colours can you use?

You can't beat a good action film.
Whether it be cheesy action with great consistency between CGI graphics or old kung-fu films and martial art moves, action has become a large part of our lives.
I had a interaction with a taste of a action form today, not physically, nor releasing my inner-chi powers to combat  a juggernaut, but a incoming client brief delivered immediately suggesting that the design should be finished asap.

I know, I know, it doesn't sound like much. But it's that shock attack feel which gives design that real feel for the true nature for being a designer, direct experience, and immediate results. That efficiency glow in the muscles after a target has been nailed, where you might as well have been bringing those PSI and Chi powers to prepare for ultimate target annihilation.

Similar to work some graffiti artists may relate to, work which is rushed under surveillance or pushed and powered by rational positions and decisions.
Sometimes to provoke the inner-talents of the true artist. A meditation, a narrow tunnel of sight between only the artist and their work. A passion for work, a passion to make others feel fuzzy. Feeling that 'fuzzy' feeling of inspiration juices across the lungs, as the mind generated ideas on end when ideas have never adventured before.

The work above is this sudden brief I have been in fact gratefully landed with.
A family based guide for a local arts exhibition which I cannot wait to finish. My previous project had been immediately dropped unfortunately, only to return at a later stage.

I have such great respects for the artists venue, and wish to create a really interesting guide to be used by families at the gallery. The artist is called Olivia Plender, and her work has been a great influence on the design. Perhaps not this one as displayed, but the exhibition guide will interact with younger audiences in art and design and allow them to partake in activities.
I will link the artists website below, I highly recommend watching such a in-depth interview concerning her new works and exhibition, greatly inspiring for those interested in imagery intention, symbolism, conceptualism act (in modern day society).

I am going on holiday tomorrow, and for this reason will not be able to blog for a week, so excuse the lack of activity.
It will be a nice week, a week away to generate and reform plans and perceptions of ideas. I can relax and enjoy the sun in another almost uncomfortable sense. So I will write back on the 10th of August and after.

My recent favourite Typeface at the moment, used in the graphic above. (discussed in a previous post).

Book cover - playing with texture and pattern!

Made such a large file size to utilise this yesterday so apologies in not posting, it was too big to upload!

Had some great and some what frustrating times in lining up the pattern and organising the layers of photoshop but gradually came to this success. Hopefully this will be printed over the next day or so I can take a few pictures of how colourful it will be using gloss 140gsm gloss.

Tasty Texture

By tasty, I mean something sensual, something that little more inline with something you can experience.

When we see and view art, we observe its visual features. Its appearance, its texture and paint strokes. But it's those hidden sensual features which help influence a greater experience of artwork itself, by involving all of the senses.

My love of negative-white space, sometimes allows me to imagine the texture of different materials when I place my hand over the creative design for example. I like to imagine an imposed raised area as I press my hands across the work.

Using negative white imagery on black background, particular in photography is best to simulate this strange tingling to the fingertips.

By cropping the work at the top, the viewer is unsure whether the work continues around the border. As a white line immediately touches the frame above, and thereby creates an imaginary shape at the viewers imagination requests. I love it. Going to use this design to cover a couple of books for college on my up coming year or so.

Some other negative white-space - http://chewingcans.blogspot.co.uk/2012/07/eco-pattern-reducereuse-and-recycle.html - enoji

Cant wait to show you the finished product!!!

Wont be able to reply for a couple of days, its ever so much hassle in resizing images to fit the small allowed file size to post on blogger. Blog soon!
